Why has Atlanta Grown?

Analyze the impact of the transformation of agriculture on Georgia's growth.
Analyze the impact of the transformation of agriculture on Georgia's growth.
After WWII, the increased advent of mechanization (invention of machines) reduces the need for farm workers. New tractors were designed to do the work of many men with only one man running the tractor. Tractors can plant and harvest crops.
As mechanization increased, former farm workers migrated to cities (such as Atlanta) for industrial/service sector jobs (factory jobs). This caused urbanization (the growth of cities) in Georgia.
Agriculture remains a large part of Georgia's economy today, it just employs far fewer workers.

How development of Atlanta contributed to growth of Georgia: role of William B. Hartsfield
William Hartsfield served as mayor of the city for an astonishing six terms (1937-1941 and 1942-1961). Although he is widely acknowledged for his leadership in making Atlanta an aviation hub of the Southeast, he also helped lead the city in the area of civil rights. In 1946, after the Georgia white primary was outlased and elections were opened to African Americans, Hartsfield organized a biracial coalition that included Dr. King, Sr., and Reverend Borders. African American leaders worked on voter registration drives. In 1948, Mayor Hartsfield hired eight African American police officers for restricted duties, a move unheard of throughout most of the South.

The Atlanta Braves came to Atlanta in 1966
The Atlanta Falcons came to Atlanta in 1966

It brings attention and tourists to the city.

Generalize the impact of Ellis Arnall
Became governor in 1943: Arnall took steps to correct the problems with university accreditation in Georgia. The General Assembly passed a constitutional amendment that made the board of regents a separate entity, no longer under the influence of the governor's office. The terms of regents were staggered so there were always experienced members serving on the board. These actions led the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to restore accreditation to Georgia's colleges and universities. Arnall also removed the prison system from the governor's control. He established a board of corrections to oversee state prisons and a pardon and parole board to handle those requests. Arnall abolished the poll tax, and, under his leadership, a new state constitution was adopted in 1945. He was the first governor to have state law allow 18 year olds to vote.
